Professor Khalid Khan established the TIPPS (Tests in Prediction of Preeclampsia’s Severity) Review Group to underpin collaborative work undertaken jointly by Academic Medical Centre, Amsterdam, Netherlands; Ramon y Cajal, Madrid, Spain; University of Birmingham Medical School, UK; and Keele University School of Medicine, Stoke-on-Trent, UK. This allowed for PhD supervision with multidisciplinary input. It also opened up career opportunities and led to seven peer-reviewed publications (2006-2011) that contributed to a PhD thesis (2011) and formed the basis for a large UK NIHR HTA grant called PREP (title: Development and validation of a Prediction model for Risk of complications in Early onset Pre-eclampsia; no. 09/22/163).

Finally, this research produced a HTA report and a prediction model for use within an application to assist patients and clinicians on the bedside. This journey ultimately contributed to the development of Dr Thangaratinam into a senior academic with appointment as Professor in UK higher education institutions (Queen Mary and Birmingham Universities) and she now enjoys a high profile within the specialty with many grants as Chief Investigator.
